While often confused with Harrison County, Ohio, Harrison is a completely different city in the State of Ohio and is located in the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky metropolitan area. The Mayor’s Court in Harrison is conducted on the first and third Tuesday of every month at 4:00 p.m.
The Harrison Mayor’s court, while still informal compared to municipal or county court is more formal than other village mayor courts. Types of Cases in Amberley Village Mayor’s Court
The Ohio Supreme Court has been on the verge of finding Mayor Courts unconstitutional, but have yet to rule that they are. With that said, mayor courts may only have jurisdiction on certain kinds of cases in Ohio. These cases include the following:
- Traffic Violations – Harrison Mayor’s Court decides moving violations such as speeding, failure to stop at a red light, or right-of-way violations under Harrison, OH Code of Ordinances Chapter 72.
- Misdemeanors — Harrison Mayor’s Court may hear limited types of misdemeanors such as curfew violations, moving violations, public indecency, open containers, and even negligent homicide. However, Harrison Mayor’s Court cannot review domestic violence cases, violation of protective orders, stalking charges, or kidnapping cases, even when they are misdemeanors.
- Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence (OVI) — OVI charges include both alcohol and drugs. OVI cases include minors charged with operating a vehicle under the influence but may also include violations under ORC § 4511.19 or Harrison Municipal Code § 8.16.03.
Harrison Mayor’s Court Penalties
The type of consequence handed down by the Harrison Mayor’s court will depend on the classification of the offense charged. The penalties for misdemeanors settled in mayor’s court include the following:
- First-degree misdemeanor –punishable by up to 180 days in jail and up to $1,000 fines.
- Second-degree misdemeanor – punishable by up to 90 days in the jail and up to $750 fines.
- Third-degree misdemeanor – punishable by up to 60 days in jail and up to $500 fines.
- Fourth-degree misdemeanor – punishable by up to 30 days in jail and up to $250 fines.
- Minor misdemeanor –no jail time and up to $150 fines.

Things to Know About Mayor’s Court
Since mayor’s courts can often be confusing, considering that the process is not as formal as a typical Ohio court case, it is important to understand the process, procedure, and jurisdiction of Ohio Mayor’s Court.
Mayor’s courts in Ohio only have limited jurisdiction
Particularly, Harrison Mayor’s Court may only hear traffic infractions, OVI charges, and most misdemeanors. Unlike, Hamilton County Municipal Court, which has broader jurisdiction, a mayor’s court cannot take cases on domestic violence or violations of protection orders, for example.
Harrison Mayor’s Courts Do Not Conduct Jury Trials
Harrison mayor’s courts, like all other mayor’s courts, are not authorized to conduct jury trials. If an individual requests a trial by jury, then he or she must formally demand a jury trial and then the case will be removed to Hamilton County Municipal Court.

Since mayor’s courts only hear certain types of cases, most individuals are confused by the process and procedure of dealing with an unfavorable resolution. If a person is dissatisfied with the outcome of a case, then he or she may appeal the decision. Generally, the appeal will be heard in the county’s municipal court.

Mayor’s court proceedings are generally held at specified times, that are decided well in advance. Harrison, like many other mayors’ courts, hold their proceedings in the early evenings. The time was intended to accommodate those individuals who have work and other commitments, who may not always be available during the day.
